Shetland Charitable Trust

  • The Shetland Charitable Trust is a charity set up to benefit the inhabitants of ShetlandOur aim is to provide public benefit to and improve the quality of life for the people of Shetland, especially in the areas of:- Social care and welfare- Arts, culture, sport and recreation- The environment, natural history and heritageShetland Charitable Trust was set up in 1976 to receive the income known as the Disturbance Receipts, which Shetland received from the oil industry. The trust seeks to benefit Shetland and its inhabitants by supporting work in the following areas:- Improving the quality of life for the inhabitants of Shetland, especially in the areas of social need, leisure, the environment and education.- Helping local self-help groups achieve their objectives.- Providing large-scale facilities of long-term benefit to the inhabitants of Shetland. Supporting traditional industries and assisting in the introduction of new ones, particularly agriculture, fishing, knitwear and aquaculture.The trust funds construction and running costs of large-scale facilities e.g. leisure centres, swimming pools, care centres and arts facilities, and is a major funder of the Shetland Recreational Trust.Grants are also made to individuals and to organisations through specific departments of Shetland Islands Council. All funding proposals should be solely for the benefit of Shetland and its inhabitants and must be made via a specific department of Shetland Islands Council. Applications are considered at least quarterly.The Trust's charitable expenditure is based on recommendations made by the Shetland Islands Council's committees.
