The Emergency Assistance Fund is open to people affected by crime across Scotland, who are in urgent need of financial help as a result of what they have experienced. People can access assistance for a wide range of goods and services where they have no other access to funds.

The Emergency Assistance Fund is available for specific costs and items following a crime. It is not a compensation fund.

VSS will arrange for the direct purchase of goods and services on behalf of the person affected.

Examples of what the Fund can cover include:

• Emergency household goods
• Food, utility or clothing expenses
• Costs to repair or replace damaged property or goods
• Contributions to funeral costs
• Moving costs
• Travel costs to a place of safety
• Security equipment costs

Who can apply

People affected by crime across Scotland who are in urgent need of financial help as a direct result of crime, and who are already receiving support from Victim Support Scotland or another organisation. Applications must be submitted through a VSS support worker or a support worker at another support organisation — individuals cannot apply independently. Those not currently receiving support can request it from Victim Support Scotland before applying.

Applicants may be eligible if:

• They can demonstrate a financial need that has occurred as a direct result of crime
• The request for financial support relates to an urgent and immediate need considered life essential
• They have no other source of funds (either through their own means or by accessing other support agencies/funds) to pay for items requested
• They are resident in Scotland* [or bereaved by a crime that happened in Scotland — see guidance]

How to apply

Applications are submitted by a support worker at Victim Support Scotland or another support organisation on behalf of the person affected by crime, using the online application form available on the Victim Support Scotland website. Individuals not currently receiving support should first request support from Victim Support Scotland before an application can be made.
