The Primary Club - Grants
Details
The Primary Club exists to raise and distribute funds to support sport and recreation for blind and visually-impaired people throughout the UK.
Most of the Club’s income comes from members' donations and is used to support a wide variety of projects. Recent examples of projects financed by The Primary Club include:
- creating children’s tactile audiobooks about three sports stars;
- supporting children’s residential outdoor activity breaks in specialised centres;
- developing a multi-sensory woodland environment in Cornwall, building on a major investment by RNIB;
- supporting several tandem cycling clubs to supply, maintain and store their equipment;
- supporting numerous clubs which offer regular training sessions and competitive matches in cricket, goalball, Showdown, baseball, golf, bowls and other sports.
Applicants should bear the following criteria in mind:
- All projects must relate clearly to the sporting and/or recreational needs of blind and visually-impaired people.
- The trustees generally prefer to support ‘grass roots’ and ‘start up’ activities rather than, for example, international teams of visually-impaired sportsmen and women.
- The trustees generally prefer to fund the whole of the cost of a project, even where this is spread across two or more years, rather than to be one of a number of contributors.
- The trustees generally prefer to support running costs or the purchase of equipment, as distinct from items which will significantly increase the recipient’s long term asset base.
- While there is no geographical limitation to the support which can be provided anywhere within the UK, the trustees are keen to encourage applications from clubs and schools in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland which are under-represented at the moment.

Who can apply
Sport and recreation clubs for blind and visually-impaired people throughout the UK.
When to apply
The trustees generally allocate funding annually in February and distribute funds in March annually. They will not normally consider applications that arrive after the 30 November deadline.
