The NMCT is the only UK grant-giver that focuses solely on the care and conservation of manuscripts in the UK. Grants are given towards the cost of repair, binding and conservation and preservation of manuscripts which in the opinion of the Trustees are of historic or educational value and towards the cost of first stage listing but not for capital costs or equipment.

Who can apply

Record offices, libraries and other similar publicly funded institutions, including local authority, university and specialist record repositories, can apply. Owners of manuscript material which is conditionally exempt from capital taxation, or which is owned by a charitable trust, can also apply provided certain conditions are met, including reasonable public access, suitable storage, a commitment to good preservation practice and assurances on reimbursement if the material is later disposed of. The custodian of a deposited collection may apply jointly with the owner.

When to apply

There are two deadlines for applications each year on 1 April and 1 October (or nearest working day where these fall at the weekend).

How to apply

Applications must be made using the Trust's application form, which can be downloaded from their website along with guidance notes. Completed forms should be submitted by email in Word format, together with the required enclosures, including a full conservation treatment proposal and images showing the current condition of the items. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Trust's Secretary beforehand to discuss a possible application or any eligibility queries.
